1870's Wooden Road Discovered

21/Mar/2022

"Following flooding of the newly purchased block of land adjacent to the Park, the floodwaters peeled back soil and plants to reveal underneath a wooden road base structured specifically to be used in wetlands, swamps and boggy areas, known as a corduroy road.

Research of the structure suggests it was constructed in the 1870's during the timber boom of Feilding and it is understood to be the only structure of its kind still in the Manawatu."

Feilding Herald February 24 2022.

Recently Landscape Archaeologist Daniel Parker visited the site and advised the Trust it must be kept covered to protect the logs which are Matai and probably cut from the original trees on the land. The road is heritage listed and cannot be disturbed so the Trust is working on ways that the public can be informed about its history without damage to the site. The logs have now been covered and the road will be marked to ensure they are protected.
